Bassist Stephan Crump began looking at bird’s nesting practices after being asked if he was enjoying being an empty-nester since his two boys were not home anymore; that led to his new and striking album, “Passerine”. The master trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith was guided by the movement of light while creating his new “Constellations And Hemispheres”, which features four different ensembles. Saxophonist Chad Fowler & pianist Eri Yamamoto went into their session without any pre-planning, just determination to create original and spontaneous music, and they did for “Polka Dots And Moonbeams”. Danish saxophonist Amalie Dahl and Swedish pianist Lisa Ullen were intent on further explorations of their musical relationship on “Live At Kafé Haerverk”, while the much-revered pianist Chick Corea was in the midst of a series of solo concerts and recordings while in the process of developing Return To Forever. Hear his ruminations on the newly-released, never-heard-before “Sometime Ago Live In Germany 1972“. Other recordings in this edition of One Man’s Jazz more than likely had similar motivations and inspirations for the artists. Isn’t that a great thing to ponder while listening to this great music!
