Henry Threadgill last week and Henry Threadgill this week. This time he’s in the company of pianist Vijay Iyer and drummer Dafnis Prieto. With 15 years of playing as a trio (their first gig was a first-time meeting at the Jazz Gallery) it’s logical to call this new release “Fifteen”. Three composers on board means plenty of meaty compositions and springboard for improvisations. “Fifteen” is definitely a 10. Pianist Myra Melford has reconvened her Fire And Water Quintet, and she and Ingrid Laubrock, Tomeka Reid, Lesley Mok & Mary Halvorson pick up right after their two previous highly praised albums as does bassist Dr. Emma Dayhuff on her sophomore release “Mountains”. She’s retained her Chicago connections through saxophonist Isaiah Collier and trumpeter Corey Wilkes but adds musicians from Los Angeles for her recording. Three new albums from Europe are sampled and al are trios: Slate Trio from England, Italian drummer Jonathan Delazer’s Botliche Skizzen, and Argentinean guitarist Gon Muruaga. The Philadelphia scene gets some love through releases by the improvising ensemble Airlift and 101 year old saxophonist Marshall Allen is featured on a new recording cobbled together at the Big Ears Festival by electric bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma. The closer is important too: a preview of the upcoming “Calling Antonin” by the James Brandon Lewis Red Lily band. Good show, hmm?
