Another episode meeting the challenge of checking out the huge numbers of new releases coming in. First off, welcome back to the master, Henry Threadgill & Zooid, after a five-year hiatus. Threadgill’s not sitting back and conducting on this one, his bristling alto and impeccable flute work are front and center on “Cut You Where You Was”, a perfect celebration of Zooid’s 25th anniversary. Two other masters celebrate the re-release on vinyl this time – pianist Matthew Shipp & bassist William Parker – Shipp’s “Zo” which came out in 1993. Shipp dedicates this track to Andrew Hill. Trumpeter Kirk Knuffke and his friend, bassist Thommy Anderson from Denmark, had a great idea to invite pianist Marilyn Crispell for a session, and “Paintbrush” is a real joy. It will be out in October. Among many more releases, check out OMJ regulars Rich Halley Quartet, The Stateless Trio with Rick Countryman switching to flute for the first time, Samuel Blaser, and Jakob Bro. Appearing for the first time on the show are Glass Triangle featuring Mette Rasmussen, bassist Santiago Lamisovsky, the Scandinavian quartet Flen, and Mingbauset with drummer Gerry Hemingway.
