A pair of new record labels from Europe dropped in to say hello this week and left some excellent music to consider for One Man’s Jazz. I have played a couple of releases from Switzerland’s Unit Records along the way, but I did not know about Cipsela, an artist-run collective from Portugal. I happily dug in, and you’ll hear the results of my listening. From Unit, a pair of piano trios – Gisela Horat & Malcolm Braff/Petter Eldh/Lukas Konig, and from Cipsela, trumpeter Luis Vicente & quartet (this one’s on my list) and guitarist Marcelo Dos Reis with tubaist Salvoandrea Luciform. You’ll also hear music from Dos Reis’ trio from an earlier release called “Our Time” which I’ve been after for a while. Relative Pitch Records releases are pretty much a regular on the show, and there’s a pair of new ones from RPR: Angles 4 featuring Sweden’s Martin Kuchen and Believe – a free improvquartet from Australia. Also new, previews from Out Of Your Head Records’ cellist Janel Leppin and bassist Mali Obomsawin, along with new releases by Dave Holland & his Sextet, saxophonist Kazuki Yamanaka, and two more piano trios: from ECM Ayumi Tanaka with Thomas Morgan & Thomas Stroenen and Italy’s Danilo Gallo EDE, inspired by and interpreting Erik Satie.
