Drummer Franklin Kiermyer’s jet propulsion style has not been heard on One Man’s Jazz for a spell, so his “Scatter The Atoms That Remain” is a welcome sound. The Montreal native has always been connected to John Coltrane, particularly the spiritual aspect. He’s been spending much of the last few years in the Far East focused on meditation and practice under the guidance of a Tibetan master. The energy that Franklin has been building up explodes on the new album. Bassist Pascal Niggenkemper is also a returnee of sorts; it was great to receive his highly intelligent and creative “The Ocean Within Us”, with French saxophonist Sakina Abdou aboard. She’s rather brilliant. You’ll hear a debut from another excellent bassist, Ilaria Capalbo from Stockholm, German saxophonist Fabian Dudek’s first gig with his quartet, more from clarinetist Ben Goldberg’s “8X8 Collection”, and the inspiration meets the inspiree on “Utility Modern”, guitarist Brandon Seabrook’s latest featuring his first big influence, Bill Frisell. There’s also a set of Far East musicians – Korean komungo master Jin Hi Kim improvising with William Parker & Oliver Lake, and Chinese free jazz reed player, Lao Dan, freewheeling at Elastic Arts in Chicago.
