The deep creative music scene in Germany reaches out to many artists, and three of the new releases in this week’s show have a Berlin reference point. Saxophonist Camila Nebbia makes that city her home base now; her new “Limbo” features a strong quintet whose members, like the native of Argentina, come from elsewhere. “Limbo” is a powerful set of tunes. Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii has played often in Berlin, and in 2014 she organized the first Orchestra Berlin. Fast forward to present day, and Fujii leads this robust ensemble on the new “Second Atttempt”. You can also count drummer Devin Gray as a sometime Berliner. His last release featured a trio that he formed there. Now he’s joined by old friend, saxophonist Nathaniel Morgan, who has also spent time in Berlin, for a sizzling duo release called “El Bronco”. Two debut releases come from British labels — vibraphonist Martin Pyne & bassist Danny Thompson. Thompson, who started the famous folk band, Pentangle, focused on presenting folk music with a jazz twist. His new “On The Road” is comprised of pieces selected by the record label & former band members. Saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi and drummer Jason Nazary take an electro-acoustic approach to their improvisation on an album they feel is a kind of tone poem, dedicated to Jaimie Branch, meanwhile there’s real poetry with music on “Dark Gable & The Roadside Assistants” by St. Louis poet K. Curtis Lyle with trumpeter George R. Sams & bassist Damon Smith. Lots more music for you in this edition, plus a tribute to the late Cassandra Wilson.
