Featured this week are new releases from Germany (drummer Joe Hertenstein’s Future Drone, the Blumer-Morgenthaler Quartet, & the Schlippenbach-Walsdorff Quartet) and a preview of bass clarinetist Ziv Taubenfeld’s November release, “Song Of The Weeds” with his fellow Lisbon residents. There’s a track from Satoko Fujii’s Orchestra Nagoya, another of her five big band releases this summer, one from the Schanzer-Speach duo with guest trumpeter Lester Bowie, a reunion-of-sorts album by soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom, and the debut of Indian bassist Bishu Chattopadhyay. Saxophonist/flautist David Leon’s new “Panamerican Orchid Club” honours his Cuban family, while saxophonist/flautist Anna Webber formed a striking new nonet to create the music for her upcoming “It’s easier to imagine the end of the world”. Scattered throughout the playlist is music from John Coltrane, celebrating his 100th birthday on September 23rd.
