Lots of new releases for sampling in this edition of OMJ, including “Lucid” from the highly regarded pianist Micah Thomas, saxophonist Victor Fox from Germany, the English quartet Let Spin, violinist Mike Khoury, long-time musical partners saxophonist Cath Roberts & bassist Olie Brice from England, and a mix of Hindustani and improvisation from the Toronto duo Amrita. The venerable and venerated Swiss drummer Pierre Favre discovered a recording in his archives that pre-dates what he thought was his first recording with his trio with Irène Schweizer & George Mraz and “Bird Food” soars. There are two albums that honour departed musicians – trumpeter Nate Wooley’s Columbia Icefield pays tribute to Wooley’s mentor Ron Miles and to band member Susan Alcorn, while Club D’Elf’s latest “Loon & Thrush” carries forward the Moroccan influence of percussionist Brahim Fribgane. I’ll leave the rest as a surprise.
