I was having so much fun putting this playlist together, I had to tell myself to stop and save some of the new releases for next week. James Brandon Lewis probably feels the same way. He keeps releasing exceptional music, and his latest with his quartet – “Omni” – opens and closes this show. There’s a definite “gospel” feel woven into his continuously developing Molecular Systematic Music. As is often the case, JBL is one of a number of saxophonists stepping up this week. English stalwart Paul Dunmall appears twice, with a younger band on his own “Afraid To Speak” and on a vintage collection of tunes by the late-80s English quartet, Tenor Tonic, which never recorded an album. The music on “That’s Our Life” comes from home sessions and various gigs. Ivo Perelman also appears twice – in an eye-popping quartet with Matthew Shipp, William Parker and Bobby Kapp & in duet fashion with bassist Damon Smith. Hot Heros with saxophonist Sami Sippola debut their latest, while German Gebhard Ullmann lets his saxophones speak loudly on “Coffee And Beans”. John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” gets revisited by the Danish Radio Big Band featuring harmonica whiz Mathias Heise, the Mat Maneri Quartet present the third in a trilogy for Sunnyside Records, South Korean drummer Soojin Suh‘s trio, and guitar aficionados will jump for joy to hear a new archival release by ECM with Mick Goodrick joining pianist Fred Hersch. Enjoy!
