New releases keep arriving at an insane rate and there’s so much to choose from. The highlight this time out is drummer Tyshawn Sorey’s brilliant look at Max Roach’s “Members, Don’t Get Weary”. Sorey reimagines Roach’s very important politcal and socially conscious album of 1968 and reminds us of the connection to today. Aussie guitarist James Wengrow’s “Emissary” introduces a new and forward thinking musician as does the trio of Israel’s Milton Michaeli & Asaf Shchori (piano/bass) and percussionist Hamid Drake. There’s a look at a couple of new poetry-connected recordings – Italian saxophonist Giancarlo Nino Locatelli frames “A Decent Run” on the poems of his late friend, English poet Tom Raworth, while New Orleans’ Don Paul pops in with a preview of an upcoming book & CD. There’s also something from the Jazz and Poetry Choir Collective from the Po Jazz program (with a pitch for support for Po Jazz’ Golda Solomon at GoFundMe). Veteran trumpeter Steven Bernstein drops in a pair – a rarely heard acoustic trio plus a completely reworked version of the trio music by producer Scotty Hard. From Europe come albums by newly discovered Polish drummer Dorota Piotrowska, German band Gulf of Berlin, Enten Eller, one of Italy’s legendary quartets, and Pendulum (pianist Benoit Delbecq, bassist Jonas Westergaard & drummer Peter Bruun) which kicks off a one EP per month project.. There’s also a new Joe Lovano quartet to contemplate.. Where else do you find shows like this, but One Man’s Jazz?
