The late trumpeter Tomasz Stanko was extremely popular, not only with music fans but fellow musicians as well. Canadian saxophonist Francois Carrier was so entranced by one of Stanko’s recordings that he made a point of having the great artist from Poland play at one of his series in Montreal. It took place in 2006. That performance has finally been released as “Openness”, one of several\ features in this edition of OMJ. Slovenian saxophonist Jure Pukl’s music was first heard on One Man’s Jazz almost 20 years ago. His star has been slowly ascending on both continents. His newest release, :Melt”, has Jure surrounded by an A-list quartet and the music is sizzling. There are several other impressive new recordings making the playlist this week: a stunning quartet led by bassist Kenneth Jimenez, vibraphonist Taiko Sato, the ubiquitous Daniel Carter, exotic singer Ruiqi Wang from Montreal via China, New Zealand saxophonist Dave Wilson, and another recording that’s been unheard for far too long: The Pyramid Trio (William Parker, Roy Campbell & Zen Matsuura). There’s plenty more too!
