Something unexpected, something I wanted to play sooner, something by a good friend, and whole bunch more excellent somethings, dot this week’s playlist. I didn’t know that the late Paul Motian had several unrecorded pieces of music, but that is the case, and English drummer Phelan Burgoyne brings those to light on his new “Yazgol”. I’ve been planning on getting some of bassist Gregg August’s “Dialogues On Race” into a show, and that finally happens this week. As for good friends, I’m more than happy to play something from the wonderful Australian saxophonist Sandy Evans’ latest. Other worthy new tunes come from bassist Mark Helias & Open Loose recorded in Australia and three that dwell in the free jazz realm: English bands The Fred Frith Trio and Mujician and New York’s new undergrounders Strictly Missionary.
