It’s been a period of wondering what the next album by Orchestra Nazionale Della Luna would sound like, and now that their new “Selene’s View” has been released, I can happily state it’s another very interesting recording. That same focus on aspects of life is still there – the growing disruption of technology and AI – as is the band’s ability to create a unique sound based on improvisation, international influences and electronics. Other new releases debuting this week come from trumpeter Kenny Warren, trombonist Nicole Connelly, pianist Simon Nabatov with his quartet and trumpeter Ralph Alessi, Italian pianist Gaspare De Lieto who features poetry amid his interesting playing, the Chicago quartet, Black Diamond, and a new duo release that’s already evoking huge praise, “Magic Incantation” by long-time musical partners, saxophonist Ivo Perelman and pianist Matthew Shipp.
