There’s been much speculation that when this infernal pandemic is under control and life gets back to as normal as possible that there may well be a true renaissance in the arts. Wouldn’t it be something if we had the emergence of a new loft scene with jazz musicians creating new sounds and developing new ideas? That was certainly the case in the 70s in New York City. Guitarist Michael Gregory Jackson was one of those young guys trying new stuff; amazingly a session he did in 1977 with Abdul Wadud, Julius Hemphill and Pheeroan Ak Laff is just now coming to light, and it’s one of the feature new albums this week. Another comes from Italian drummer Francesca Remigi & Archipelagos. What a debut “Il Labirinto Dei Topi” is!!!!!!! There’s music from a very vibrant overview of the contemporary South African scene, sizzling west coast music from saxophonist Jon Armstrong, and a track from Poland’s top release of 2020.
