Seems like there are always new recordings being issued by saxophonists, and this week’s edition of OMJ has a few — rising star Kevin Sun assembled his trio for a somewhat jet-lagged session in NY right after a residency in Beijing, but you wouldn’t know it; and L.A.’s Daniel Rotem offers up “Solo”, a very personal and intimate set of music. On the group side of things, my favourite trombonist Samuel Blaser leads his quartet through a bluesy live set recorded during a window in the pandemic this fall, another trombonist, James Macauley from Australia leads a young quartet of Japanese musicians in a live set from Tokyo, and Argentinean pianist Pia Hernandez presents her Quinteto on “Relicario”, a follow-up to her excellent trio release earlier this year. There’s a first-time meeting of three European improvisers on “Ritual Expansion” and a whole bunch more of great stuff (including another Ayler Christmas “carol” from Mars Williams and Dezron Douglas and Brandee Younger live from their apartment in Brooklyn NY).
