Swiss trombonist Samuel Blaser is fast becoming a major player and composer in the realm of avant and free jazz. You could say he's "blazing" his way through the music business. Sorry, bad pun. He has two new recordings out, one a co-led session with bassist Michael Bates called One From None on the Fresh Sound New Talent label, and the other on Hatology, with his regular quartet of Marc Ducret on guitar, Banz Oester on bass, and Gerald Cleaver on drums. That one is entitled As The Sea. I'll be featuring a pair of tracks from the Bates/Blaser quintet, and you'll get to hear the entire four-part suite from As The Sea. Plus some Secret Society tracks and some vintage Ornette. |

The AACM's first meeting in Chicago back in the '60s took place in Philip Cohran's living room. Cohran was an important figure in the creation of that organization. He was also creating a large family -- 15 kids -- and now eight of them play in the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Papa Cohran is now known as Kelan Philp Cohran, and I'll have two tracks from a recent release by the father and sons. There will also be new releases from Sexmob and Allison Miller's Boom Tic Boom, both on Royal Potato and an indie release bassist Shayna Dulberger, plus music from Italy. It's a full show. |

More new releases, including a brilliant project from Jaimeo Brown (hope to interview him about "Transcendence"); some fire from Hütte from Germany, new pianist-to-watch Nick Sanders, the Rich Halley 4, Darcy James Argue's latest, and Trilok Gurtu's Don Cherry-flavoured "Spellbound". Check it out. |

I'm jumping the gun on International Jazz Day which is celebrated on April 30th. Then again this show will repeat on April 30th, so the timing is right. However, One Man's Jazz has always featured great jazz musicians from around the world for years, so it's nice to be ahead of the curve. There's lots of great music: like the Art Ensemble of Chicago from Paris in 1970, Joe Zawinul, the Norwegian Wind Ensemble, Michel Portal, Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath, plus a very special concert set: Ultramarine recorded live in Lviv, Ukraine. |
