What’s new, you ask? This week some trios debut new releases. Long time collaborators Matthew Shipp (piano), William Parker (bass) and Whit Dickey (drums) have a winner in “Village Mothership”, their first recording as a trio in many years. There are three new European trios to enjoy as well: Swiss drummer Florian Arbenz, French pianist Matthieu Mazué, and the Belgium three some of guitarist Manu Codjia with bassist Giuseppe Millaci & and drummer Lieven Venken. Chicago musicians, guitarist Dan Phillips and drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake hook up again on “L’Avventura Di Vivere”. Taku Hirano, a wonderful cross-genre percussionist drops a little blues on the proceedings, and you want to check out the closing tune, from American transplant saxophonist Ghasem Batamuntu. I think you’ll be hearing him a fair amount over the next few shows.
