New releases dominate this episode, including the exotic sounds of the Korean zither – the gayageum – as played by Do Yeon Kim, whose brilliance has been showing up on many albums of late. “Wellspring”, though, is her first as a leader. It’s very different, challenging, and unique. Nite Bjuti, that one-of-a-kind trio, has just released “Minwi”, their second album, and its pointed at the Caribbean diaspora and social issues. Josilemi is a powerhouse trio of Joe Fonda bass, Silke Eberhard saxophone & Emil Gross drums, and they push the envelope on their new “Hear This”. Drummer Jeff Cosgrove is back with the first of a planned series of recordings; there are two duos from France (Christine Wodrascka & Bernard Santacruz and Florian Chaigne & Cyril Trochu who record in darkness because Trochu is blind) and a pair of brilliant pianists – Satoko Fujii & Myra Melford. The German quartet, Alm, makes its OMJ debut as does the Charles Downs Quartet, while the frequently heard and recently acknowledged as a Guggenheim Fellow, James Brandon Lewis, is heard twice – on Dave Douglas’ new “Transcend” and on his own “These Are Soulful Days” with the Lutosławski Quartet from Poland. Much to like in this one.
