The sound of the saxophone is very prominent in this episode of OMJ. Only 4 of 25 tracks don’t have a saxophone somewhere in the music. New releases featuring reed players sampled this week come from Alex Harding (with pianist Lucian Ban), Ivo Perelman (with Tom Rainey & Mark Helias), the Puhti Trio from Finland, Polish drummer Teo Olter and the veteran Charles Lloyd fronting a new quartet. South African drummer Asher Gamedze visited Cairo back in 2022 and workshopped some new tunes with local players and three of those tracks comprise a new EP release by International Anthem, while down in Melbourne Australia, Canadian cellist Peggy Lee was visiting her husband drummer Dylan Van der Schyff who’s teaching there. They hooked up with trumpet player Paul Williamson for the new “Old Country, New Country”. Lots more for you as well.
