A free jazz explosion happened in Europe in the late ‘60s, with much of the action happening in Paris. The local French practitioners of freer musical expression received a major jolt of influence and creativity when several members of the AACM in Chicago ventured across the Atlantic seeking better opportunities to play and receive recognition for what they were doing. A pianist/alto sax player, Joachim Kuhn, had escaped East Germany years before that, and began to travel around Europe. He found himself on stage in Paris in 1969 with a sizzling trio, and that night’s music has finally been released. “Scream For Peace” is the feature this week, along with other great new releases from Devin Brahja Waldman & Hamid Drake, the Polish O.N.E. Quartet, Keefe Jackson & Jan Oscar Hoogland, the Java Quartet from Australia, and South African pianist Nduduzo Makhathini. Some very good stuff for you!!!
