It has been written that Thelonious Monk was both simultaneously constructing and deconstructing his music. So taking that a step further, two Italians – trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini and percussionist Sergio Armaroli – decided to deconstruct the deconstructor. Their new “Deconstructing Monk In Africa” is a most unusual and unique album. You’ll hear a sample of that in this episode. There’s music from more albums from the Swedish Kopasetic label, and the last part of “Live at the 55 Bar” from Monder/Malaby/Rainey. German trombonist and his band Underground Project take on Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition, and Chicago’s Kuzu offer a sample of their latest. Lastly, a tribute to pianist Frank Kimbrough who passed away on December 30th.
