Genre-stretching albums dot this episode’s playlist that should evoke some deep thinking. Vocalist Amirtha Kidambi and her Elder Ones band espouse protest and change in their music, heightened by the George Floyd murder in 2020. The Ewart/Asplin/Ricks Trio, featuring AACM master reedist and sometimes poet, Douglas Ewart, combine free improvisation, electronics, classical elements and spoken word in their live performance at Brigham Young University. Drummer and composer Ches Smith continues to release challenging projects, and the new “Laugh Ash” reaches a new level of creativity. On the more expected level, two of Poland’s top improvisers hook up – trumpeter Piotr Damasiewicz and pianist Dominik Wania, Roberto Ottaviano’s Eternal Love from Italy displays sheer musicianship as always, Japan’s Satoko Fujii and Ryoko Ono team up for a first-time piano-saxophone improvising session, and there’s a preview of what might be coming as a result of a new partnership between Ropeadope Records and an African music advocacy organization – trumpeter Ndabo Zulu’s epic recording “Queen Nandi: The African Symphony” is sampled.
