As much as clarinetist Ben Goldberg’s “Good Day For Cloud Fishing” is filled with great music, it’s the concept that went into making this recording that is so very fascinating. Goldberg was a fan of poet Dean Young’s work, so Young became part of the project. The band would interpret musically one of his poems, then with him in the studio, he would write a poetic work based on the music he just heard, then the band would improvise on that, then Young would write another poem using that music for inspiration, and so on. The album is definitely unique in that way. There’s more improv through the show, with Portuguese pianist Daniel Bernardes and ensemble playing music inspired by Olivier Messiaen, the three-saxophone group from Germany – Kongrosian – and a killer band called The Bureau Of Atomic Tourism with its much-anticipated second release. There’s also a risk-taking big band from Italy to check out, solo piano from the esteemed Anthony Colelman, and a big finish from two new Finnish albums from We Jazz Records.
