I got quite the surprise the other day when I played a new album from Italy by saxophonist Emanuele Passerini. His name was vaguely familiar, and a bit of research turned up his name as a member of a couple of Italian bands played in the past. The surprise was just how bloody exciting a player he is. Wow! It was like the first time I heard Emile Parisien. Passerini’s new album, “Trio Geometrics” is outstanding, and it’s featured this week. (Emanuele says he’s not a professional musician. He has a full time job.)
Other new releases featuring saxophonists come from Catherine Sikora and the tandem of Jon Irabagon with and Sylvain Rifflet. The L.A. Quartet, Chord Four, debuts “Bigger, Smaller, Nows”, Argentinean trumpeter Lucas Acuña introduces his trio, and trail-blazing guitarist leads the way on the new “A Love
Supreme Electric”. Plenty more electricity for you, too.
