Hour one of this episode features the Gard Nilssen Supersonic Orchestra, probably the most powerful large ensemble in Europe. The excellent drummer from Norway has assembled a 17-piece aggregation of Scandinavian all-stars and they take no prisoners…and nary one chordal instrument in sight. The second set is highlighted by more from the newly discovered Nina Simone live at the 1966 Newport Jazz Festival, and contemporary composer and artist Damon Locks, whose Black Monument Ensemble examines the place of Black America in current society. The final hour presents the European trio HIIT, more from Jaimie Branch’s final recording coming in late August, and closes with the debut of talented young and interesting guitarist, Noah Gershwin.
