There’s plenty of energy and spirit on display in this episode of One Man’s Jazz. Pianist Satoko Fujii and a quartet tear things up from an album that is still a bit of a mystery as to who, where, what and when. Bassist Billy Mohler’s new quartet release is steamin’, and the trio of bassist Kenneth Jimenez, altoist Michael Attias and drummer Francisco Mela must have had some bristling sessions at Attias’ apartment putting this band together. There’s some cool blues from poet Ishmael Reed with an all-star band that features David Murray, the amazing duo of flautist Nicole Mitchell and pianist Alexander Hawkins, and you’ll hear the second release from the 7 Poets Trio led by drummer Tomas Fujiwara. This show also marks the introduction of Taiwanese violinist Hsinwei Chiang, and presents the very first trio album by the great pianist Anthony Davis. A pretty stunning lineup, all told.
