Guitarist Marc Ribot hasn’t made an all-instrumental album in 14 years, so his new “Hurry Red Telephone” is a welcome addition to his catalogue; it’s one of the more interesting albums of the year too. Ribot seems to have had his old Spiritual Unity Quartet in mind too, reuniting with drummer Chad Taylor, then recording two sessions with different personnel that includes saxophonists James Brandon Lewis, Briggan Kraus & Brian Settles. Check this one out!! Lately, saxophonist Camila Nebbia pops up frequently, and she’s back again as a member of fellow Argentinean, drummer Andres Elstein’s trio. “Agridulce” is one of the better trio sets this year. As usual, free jazz globe spins around and out flies great music: Japan’s Trio Export 63, Swiss saxophonist Jochen Baldes, Sweden’s Space (Lisa Ullen, Elsa Bergmann & Anna Lund), Enrico Rava & his youthful Fearless Five from Italy, bass clarinetist Ziv Taubenfeld from Lisbon, the Budapest Hungary free jazz trio Cox/Ajtai/Gyarfas, and some powerhouse drumming from China’s Zhitong Xu & X-Shape. Add in prominent saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock’s new album “Spirit, Fire, Fact” with a new band – Grammy Season – and this show sparkles with new sounds and ideas. I hope you like it!
