Three of jazz’ royalty, bassist Reggie Workman, drummer Andrew Cyrille & saxophonist Oliver Lake performed brilliantly for 35 years as Trio 3. Shortly after Lake’s retirement in 2022, Workman & Cyrille asked the much-younger and much-heralded pianist David Virelles to join them for a gig. It went so well that the wheels were set in motion for the formation of a new trio called Trio Imagination. Now the trio’s debut recording has been released by Pi Recordings and “Creative Inspirations” is a most expressive and impressive set of music. Highly recommended, as is the latest from another trio albeit in a different direction entirely – Exhaust, which is saxophonist Camila Nebbia, keyboardist Kit Downes & drummer Andrew Lisle.
Nebbia is in the midst of a rise to prominence in free jazz these days, and this powerful trio performance adds more fuel to the fire. There are other terrific new releases highlighted in this episode: three from the German Jazzhausmusik label (vibraphonist Stefan Bauer, pianist Georg Ruby & trio, and the Hannes Zerbe Jazz Orchestra Berlin tapping into Jimi Hendrix), pianist Kris Davis’ second album by her latest trio, Danish drummer Kresten Osgood’s 50th birthday celebration, guitarist Jakob Bro also from Denmark with guest saxophonist the incomparable Charles Lloyd, multi-reedist Michael Moss’ 4-album release, and a preview track from the Belgian quartet Ola Tunji that tells us to “speak up”.
