There’s a saxophonic theme running through the new releases sampled in this edition of OMJ. Switzerland’s Maria Grand’s new “Both Sides” marks an energetic return for Maria since her previous album with celebrated motherhood and pregnancy, and she introduces a new trend perhaps – audio liner notes. Abate Berihun brought his saxophone skills from Ethiopia to Israel at some costs along the way: wounded in a rebel attack and severe burns on his hands while trying to make ends meet in a new country. His new “Addis Ken” reveals music influenced by Jewish soul tunes, Ethiopian jazz and improvisation of the masters. Anna Webber is a key part of George, the unpredictable group led by drummer John Hollenbeck, while Caleb Wheeler Curtis uses a different reed instrument on his new “Ritual” – a stritch, normally associated with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who took an alto sax and “straightened it out”. And there’s a new saxophone name to ponder: Peyton Pleninger. You’ll hear him in an improvised trio setting with drummer Phil Haynes and guitarist Ben Monder. Lastly, if you’re old enough, Polish violinist Tomasz Chyla may well take you back to the days of Zbigniew Seifert and Jean-Luc Ponty with his playing on “It’s Not Fake, It’s A Replica”.
