I didn’t set out to throw a spotlight on saxophonists in this edition, so I guess it happened somewhat organically. First off, Vinny Golia, master of many reeds and woodwinds, who has been the rock of creative music in California so many years is featured on a new release, a re-release and in a duet with bassist Kelsey Mines – three shades of Golia. James Brandon Lewis – no doubt a star these days – is heard on a preview track from the next Messthetics album, while English free wheeler Alan Wilkinson blows mightily with the new Finnish group, Hatka, in their debut. Devin Brahja Waldman is a pretty eclectic cat, but no one was likely expecting some modal disco on his latest recording, and likely no one was expecting “Circle The Heart”, an archival recording from 1982 with the late Julius Hemphill duetting with his protégé Marty Ehrlich; more surprisingly it’s on the Relative Pitch label, known for free improvisation and experimentation. Lastly, Richard Howell and Sheldon Brown dazzle on “The Last Trane To Africa”, percussionist Ian Dogole’s new album. One Man’s Jazz has been sort of documenting the progress of this project since Ian began to work on the idea. It’s ready now, and it’s terrific. Also new this week, Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler and octet perform music composed for the poetry of Basho, and a German quartet, Ein Gschlößl Pöschl, tear up the scenery on their “Live In Berlin”.
