There’s a bit of an “edge” in this episode with some very powerful free jazz highlights; they begin with a duet album recorded in China by renowned flutist Lao Dan switching to tenor saxophone playing with Vasco Trilla from Spain on drums. “New Species” was recorded at the 2024 Oct-Loft Jazz Festival in Shenzen City. Then there’s the trio, Last Dream Of The Morning’s “Sharp Illusion” – brilliant playing by the English trio of John Butcher, saxophones, John Edwards bass and Mark Sanders drums. The Portuguese trio Nao Confundir Com show the possibilities that arise from mixing alto sax with double bass and vocals. There’s early Tomasz Stanko and unreleased music from the 1970s, English pianist Mark Pringle, Chicago cellist Ishmael Ali, and Austin Texas quartet Atlas Maior as well. You’ll also hear a superb fusion of improvisation with ethnic percussion from Polyglot, and the closing music from keyboardist Craig Taborn’s new ECM release “Dream Archives” with Tomeka Reid and Ches Smith.
