The stream of new releases continues to flow; this week’s debuts include the much-anticipated first album by German saxophonist/composer Julius Gawlik. I’ve been impressed with him as a member of Jim Black’s The Schrimps, and Julius does not disappoint. For good measure, Jim Black’s playing drums for a little more inspiration. The avant garde is served well this week with new trio releases from the Berlin threesome of saxophonist Camila Nebbia, bassist James Banner & drummer Max Andrzejewski and a pair of trumpet/bass/drums trios where the bassists are the nominal leaders (John Edwards/Vasco Trilla/Luis Vicente) & (Joe Morris/Tyshawn Sorey/Peter Evans), and the return of reed master Gebhard Ullmann’s Conference Call. The Italian quartet Tell No Lies plays the truth on their new “Mantica”, and two excellent bassists from Portugal are on hand: Rodrigo Correia (a debut) and the return of André Carvalho, now back in his home country. Lots more interesting music that includes some Jack DeJohnette along the way. Of course.
