October 9, 2025 #1431   ——————–   A book about a bi-racial man passing as white, written by James Weldon Johnson, one of the central figures of the Harlem Renaissance and a key member of the civil right s movement, was the motivation for saxophonist Mark Turner’s latest release “Reflections on: The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man”. Turner could relate heavily to this since some members of his own family were able to “pass” as white. Turner uses Johnson’s words to shape and enhance the music, played by a strong band with pianist David Virelles, trumpeter Jason Palmer, bassist Matt Brewer & drummer Nasheet Waits. It’s the feature recording in this edition of One Man’s Jazz. The late innovative trumpeter Herb Robertson is featured on “Blue Transients”, an album recorded in Germany in early 2024 with the trio of Christopher Dell – vibes, Christian Ramond – bass & Klaus Kugel – drums. The album is one of Robertson’s last sessions. Other music from Europe heard for the first time comes from the Polish quartet O.N.E., Italian trumpeter Tomasso Iacoviello, Swedish guitarist Johan Lindstrom and the German duo Hobby House. Ivo Perelman & Nate Wooley have released “Polarity 4″, their fourth duet, while Laura Ann Singh debuts her “Mean Reds”, and there’s a preview of an upcoming album by pianist Shoko Nagai that’s going to open some ears.
