Sometimes it seems like a show almost programs itself. Lately, the quality of new releases is so good that tunes just fall into place. Ten seconds into “Sonic Mountains” from “Murasaki” (Jakob Bro, Wadada Leo Smith & Marcus Gilmore) and I knew this was the show’s closer, and the brilliant flute work by Larry Stabbins on a track from “Aurora” by the English trio Sarost had to be the lead-in. It was no problem finding spots for new albums by drummer Enrique Haneine, pianist Liv Andrea Hauge and her Norwegian trio, trumpeter Brad Henkel’s quartet, a pair of Boomslang Record’s free jazz catalog, Germany’s free jazz hero Gebhard Ullmann & all his toys, a Portuguese homage to Paul Motian by Hernani Faustino’s Motian & More, and the whipped cream on top, Henry Threadgill’s latest head-spinning originality. So easy.
