Programming One Man’s Jazz always feels like a privilege to me, choosing from among such amazing music. This episode is one that makes me feel more blessed because there are some amazing new albums to sample this week. For instance, Mary Halvorson continues to blaze a trail of ultra-creative music, this time with Code Girl – she adds spoken word, in particular the voice of Robert Wyatt, or James Brandon Lewis introducing his concept of Molecular Systematic Music on his new “Molecular”. Tim Berne continues his extremely productive 2020 with the release of “The Deceptive 4 – Live”, tunes that one might call “formative” for the band’s future performances. Then there’s keyboard star Craig Taborn’s Junk Magic, not heard from a few years, all dial-twisty and electro in nature. Finally, you’ll hear music from what is likely the last session recorded by the late Italian pianist, Gianni Lenoci. “Uncle” leads a strong trio with fellow Italian Pasquale Gadaleta on bass and the marvelous Rakalam Bob Moses on drums. They tackle the harmolodics of Ornette Coleman on “Wild Geese”. Hope you enjoy this one.
