Two albums debuting in this week’s edition of One Man’s Jazz are celebratory in nature. The wildly eclectic and powerful Dutch Ensemble Spinifex hits its 20-year mark with the release of “Maximus” next month, while the funkified, brass band-like, New Orleans flavoured Revolutionary Snake Ensemble’s “Serpentine” marks the 35th year as a band. Bassist Thomas Morgan has been lauded by just about everyone for his talents. He’s graced so many groups and bands with his exquisite sound. He too has a debut coming in November – “Around You Is A Forest”. It’s a series of duets with some of today’s top players, but Morgan uses his self-designed Super-Collider digital instrument, “Woods”. This is a very unique sounding recording. Two new piano trios debut: Italy’s Esmerelda Sella and the Brooklyn NY Prawntail. Trio Of Bloom’s debut is officially out with Craig Taborn, Nels Cline & Marcus Gilmore, and so is “Half Of What You See” by Wrens, a quartet that trumpet player Ryan Easter calls “sinister”. And for some historical flavour, you’ll hear music from the upcoming “Bremen 1965” by the Thelonious Monk Quartet and a track from a second volume of music by the Scandinavian Art Ensemble featuring Tomasz Stanko.
