New releases to listen for: Phil Haynes“A Life Improvised”, the companion recording to his new memoir Chasing the Masters: First Takes of a Modernist Drumming Artist. The music consists of various tracks from his discography; you’ll hear three of those; The Drasler-Roysum Trio from Slovenia; Drummer John Hollenbeck with the Monash University Jazz Ensemble from Melbourne: Three new releases from Germany’s Aut Records; and Chicago guitarist Dan Phillips & a new two-drum trio. There’s also a short look back at saxophonist Marion Brown and a tribute to the amazing composer, arranger and pianist Carla Bley. RIP Carla.
