This episode’s new releases are predominantly from the other side of the Atlantic. Danish alto saxophonist Benjamin Koppel is re-releasing on vinyl a 2015 recording, “The Art Of The Quartet”, which features Scott Colley, Kenny Werner & Jack DeJohnette. A second volume will follow. German alto player Fabian Dudek is capturing plenty of attention with his original ideas and music, and those are enhanced by the presence of saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock. Irish bassist Alan Niblock joins with two of England’s finest free jazzers – saxophonist John Butcher & drummer Mark Sanders – on “Tectonic Plates”, while the Portuguese quartet, Mazam, makes a stunning return with “Pilgrimage Volume 2″, the German duo Shrunk, and Danish/English bassist Jasper Hoiby issues a challenge on his new “We Must Fight” with his unique band, Fellow Creatures. From the North American side you’ll hear music from new albums by David Liebman with Adam Rudolph & Billy Hart and a startling new quartet led by drummer Dan Weiss. Concluding the show you’ll hear music from “The Lost Sessions – Paris 1979″ by pianist Dave Burrell and drummer Sam Woodyard. Great story behind this one.
