In 2023 the well-respected drummer Phil Haynes embarked on a project to document his past musical history. He made an impressive debut, releasing not only a 60-plus collection of songs called “A Life Improvised” with various bands, but also a book titled “Chasing The Masters”. There were hints of more to come in 2024, and a new 3-cd set called “The Complete American Recordings”, focused on the band 4 Horns &What. It’s one of the featured new releases in this episode. Others include cellist Janel Leppin’s latest with her Ensemble Volcanic Ash, Italian saxophonist Rosario Giuliani, and three albums by pianists: South Africa’s Nduduzo Makhathini, Switzerland’s Sebastien Amman, and the Flame Trio from England which is led by Robert Mitchell. Plus much more great music including another one heralding bassist William Parker’s Lifetime Achievement Award the Vision Festival later this month.
