Sadly, two of the free jazz world’s most important drummers passed away this month: Sven-Åke Johansson & Louis Moholo Moholo. The Swedish-born Johansson defined free jazz drumming in Germany through the 60s – 80s, and was very much his own man, eschewing institutions and groups. Moholo Moholo’s passing brings an end to one of the most enduring stories in jazz. He was the last surviving member of the Bluenotes who fled South African apartheid for England where they became part of the bedrock of English and European creative music. Both are remembered in this episode.
