I’m digging into a wide variety of new releases this time out, and the highlight of the bunch comes from a never-heard-before recording of John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy. “Evenings At The Village Gate: John Coltrane With Eric Dolphy” has music that was recorded while testing a new sound system at the Village Gate while Coltrane was in the midst of a residency at the club in 1961. The recorded tapes were considered lost but turned up at the NY Public Library for the Performing Arts. Watch for this release on July 14th. Also sampled are new releases from Swiss drummer Clemens Kuratle, Canadian pianist Francois Bourassaand his quartet, Argentinean drummer Federico Isasti, and the German quartet Twirls. The ever-busy saxophonist James Brandon Lewis is back too, on a track from an album he made in France with electric bass wizard Floy Krouchi.
