“I’ll take the Combination Special, please.” That’s the theme running through several of the new releases sampled this time around on OMJ. Prolific saxophonist Ivo Perelman’s “A Modicum Of The Blues” brings together several of the musicians regularl heard on his duo and trio works into a rousing free-blowing quintet. John O’Gallagher, the fine saxophonist now living in Portugal, reunites with an old friend, guitarist Ben Monder, on his newest album, “Ancestral” where for the first time two master drummers meet: Andrew Cyrille & Billy Hart. Drummer Tomas Fujiwara formed a new percussion quartet for “Dream-Up” and it combines percussion from around the world, including Japanese Taiko drumming. NY guitarist Terrence McManus and multi-instrumentalist Billy Drewes combine their talents on “Normal Nightmare” and sound like a much larger band, while saxophonist Jon Irabagon grabs a trio of Chicago homies to celebrate his hometown on the new “Someone To Someone”. Meanwhile the musicians of Taragot Sounds Records from Norway look to non-traditional instruments from many lands to combine with their jazz improvisations.
