The new albums sampled in this edition cut a wide swath through improvised music. Baritone saxophonist Dave Sewelson’s band on “Muscle Memory” is a true all-star NY ensemble with drummer Steve Hirsh, trombonist Steve Swell, pianist Matthew Shipp and bassist William Parker. That’s a killer quintet, and rising star drummer Juan Chiavassa takes a similar approach to his debut album working with among others, John Patitucci on bass and Mike Stern on guitar. English bassist Neil Charles forms his new “Dark Days” around some texts of James Baldwin, spoken by the veteran Cleveland Watkiss. Four new groups debut: Italy’s Smooth Elevator, bassist Miguel Angelo’s trio from Portugal, Sifter from California and the first time meeting of Argentineans – drummer Fabio Pinas, trumpeter Lucas Albarracin & reedist Matias Formica. All of that is topped off by solo joints from guitarist Gregg Belisle-Chi tackling the music of Tim Berne again, pianist Aruan Ortiz, and the most excellent electric bassist Rich Brown.
