I’ve played various bands from Germany with Fabian Arends on drums, but never where he’s been the leader. That ship gets righted with a pair of tracks from Fabian’s band Fosterchild – tight, progressive and searching! I have also played some pretty weird albums too, but “Imaginary Songbook” with its two CDs of 64 tune all but one less than two minutes long outdoes many a punk album. The artists are vibist Sergio Armaroli, bassist/vocals Steve Piccolo and guitarist/saxophonist Elliott Sharp. Other new releases of note come from French master clarinetist Louis Sclavis, trombonist Jacob Garchik, the piano trio of Matthew Putman, Hill Greene & Francisco Mela, French saxophonist Mathieu Donarier, the sizzling Jim Black & The Schrimps, and a sample of an upcoming release by Trio of Bloom – Craig Taborn, Nels Cline & Marcus Gilmore.
