Saxophonist and free jazz icon Peter Brötzmann passed away on June 22nd. His loss was felt everywhere. Considered one of the instigators of free jazz in Europe, he became much more than that, bringing his big raucous and ever-surging-forward sound and making his mark to all parts of the world. The first part of this episode recognizes Peter Brötzmann. Also new this week, two important saxophonists, from Spain the Liba Villavechia Trio and from Poland Marek Pospiezalski, plus Orquestra Del Tiempo Perdido – all three among the latest releases by Clean Feed – as is Brew, a wonderful trio of bassist Reggie Workman, drummer Gerry Hemingway and koto player Miya Masaoka. And guitarist Eric Hofbauer’s latest, inspired by the speech patterns of climate activist Greta Thunberg.
