I’m always more than happy to play music from up-and-coming artists; they need the exposure. This week three very promising debuts are featured – bassist Felix Henkelhausen and his quintet and drummer Maximilian Hering and his band (both are from Germany) plus bass clarinetist Emma Famin from Buenos Aires. Pianist Carol Leibowitz, bassist Adam Lane and drummer Adam Drury made their debuts years ago, but “Blue Shift” which they recorded as In Real Time, is a debut for the trio. Rudresh Mahanthappa and his Hero Trio are back with a new one and Chicago saxophonist Dave Rempis and drummer Avreeayl Ra create some brilliant music on their new “Bennu”. As always, there’s plenty good listening.
