German saxophonist Philipp Gropper & his band, Philm, are back recording. After a seven-year hiatus from the recording studio, Gropper, Elias Stemeseder, Robert Landfermann & Leif Berger have released two distinctly different albums that show the judges were bang-on when they selected Philm as the outstanding group in the first year of the German Jazz Preis awards in 2021. Bellbird is an exciting new quartet from Montreal with a decidedly improvisatory approach that’s refreshingly original. Danish saxophonist Amalie Dahl is now living in Norway and she’s drawn upon that country’s deep pool of talent for her latest release. “Extended” finds Dahl fronting an expanded version of Dafnie, her usual quintet, rocking it out at the Molde Jazz Festival. You will also get to hear new tunes from bassist Manolo Cabras’ quartet, French pianist Matthieu Mazué from his debut for the NY label, 577 Records, and a pair of albums from Australia – saxophonist & professor Robert Burke with students from the jazz program at Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music at Monash University in Melbourne and Asteroid Ekosystem, a sizzling quartet from Sydney.
