In the previous edition of OMJ I featured a lot of terrific bassists throughout the playlist. There are more this time around too, but let me tag a few specifically: Antii Lotjonen with a new recording with his Quintet East, France’s Hubert Dupont and Trio Aurore, young Arizona bassist Andrew Schiller whom I intended to play last week but ran out of room, Norway’s Per Zanussi, and electric bassist Olivier Lété from France, . There’s lots of other great music too with a pair of English free jazz saxophonists debuting new releases – Trevor Watts and Alex Ward. Polish reed man, Adam Pieronczyk is back with a new album where he uses the music of the renowned Polish composer Karol Szymanowski as the starting point for his improvisations, while “Live At No Somos Nada” finds the usually Philippine-based alto player Rick Countryman improvising in Mexico City.
