Golden moments happen on a new recording called “Hz of Gold”, recently released by drummer Devin Gray, saxophonist Frank Gratkowski & multi-instrumentalist Andrea Parkins. They have been meeting a couple of times each year to create highly charged free improvisational music. This 2021 session captures the trio’s magic. Canada’s Gordon Grdina has released three different recordings at one time, with each revealing a different group and sound, marked by his brilliant guitar or oud. You’ll hear his Focus Quartet and a duet with pianist Russ Lossing. Multi-reedist Jon Irabagon also has released multiple new albums. His quartet is featured this week. Guitarist Aaron Quinn & Sunchoke make their OMJ debut, and it’s a fiery one. Also heard on the show for the first time are Japanese saxophonist Masayo Koketsu playing with drummer Nava Dunkelman, the uncategorizable trio, Remergency, and though Billy Mohler’s a regular on OMJ, his Euro-American Quartet is new and captured live at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.
