Saxophonist Jure Pukl makes a return to One Man’s Jazz, and it’s a welcome one. He and his band of John Escreet (piano), Joe Sanders (bass) & Christian Lillinger (drums) take on artificial intelligence with a brisk session that says there’s no way AI will ever replace live, improvising musicians. Nice to see the return of poet/vocalist/composer Maryanne de Prophetis too. She’s got a terrific band with her on the new “Come O Light”. Charles Lloyd’s latest “Figure In Blue” has a bluesy edge to it – you can always trust the blues. Three duets really stand out: bassist Kelsey Mines with woodwind master Vinny Golia, Italians Nicola Guazzaloca & Francesco Guerri (piano & cello), and trumpeter Peter Evans who has been very busy this year hooked up with drummer Mike Pride. German drummer Max Hering is back with his Spanish mates, and two new artists impress: pianist/vocalist/composer Gabriel Zucker & pianist Mark Pringle from England. And I’m especially stoked for the new album from Thomas Heberer’s Remedy trio. Their album from earlier this year is exceptional and now they follow that with a release featuring pianist Aki Takase playing with the trumpeter, bassist Joe Fonda & drummer Joe Hertenstein.
